Thrivent

Have you remembered the church in your will? Your will is a valuable part of your life-long stewardship plan. By preparing a will which includes a gift toministry, you can plan to return to the Lord a tithe or other portion of the assets remaining when you die. You can plan now to leave a legacy for the future of this congregation or other ministries of the church. For help in developing an estate plan that will take care of your family and your favorite ministries, please contact Barbara B. Carl, ELCA Foundation Regional Gift Planner, at 724-438-7741, or the ELCA Foundation at 800-638-3522 ext. 2970.

What is Stewardship?

I felt I could learn more about it when asked to be part of the new Stewardship Committee. I hope it is something we will all learn more about. Stewardship is more than money or treasure; it is time and talent too. We may not have the MOST treasure, talent or time - but even a small combination of each could result in unforeseen wealth in our church, community, home and world.

How can we best use our gifts from God, gifts we have been entrusted with? I look into our daily lives. Do we use, reuse and recycle as much as possible? Do we need the newest gadget on the market or use what we have that works just fine? Do we go with the trendiest things or look at the reduced or not so current items? My family knows my answers!!

A steward is a manager of someone else’s property. God created the world and everything belongs to Him. Are we good stewards with God’s belongings? Do we use all of God’s resources wisely? God calls us to be good stewards of all that He has entrusted us with, including our time, our treasure, and our talents. I believe we can all find a little of each to spare.  This is what makes our congregation work, the time, talent, and treasure willingly shared by the members.

Saint Paul wrote to Timothy, “Command them to do good, to be rich in good deeds and to be generous and willing to share” 1 Timothy 6:18.  I hope we may all grow in our understanding of Stewardship together and use God’s resources wisely!

This is the first in a series of articles from the new stewardship committee here at St. Paul.  We hope to raise awareness within the congregation about the gifts God has entrusted to us and how those gifts can best be used to further God’s will.

DISASTER RESPONSE

As of May 12, 2010, ELCA Disaster Response has received $10.5 million in gifts, helping them provide food, water, medical supplies, shelter and much more for the people of Haiti.  Such generosity speaks to the work that Lutherans can do together.
Did you know that every dollar donated for Disaster Response goes directly to the people in need?  The ELCA is able to do this because administrative costs are covered through regular mission support dollars from congregations and synods.

Lutherlyn News

Although there were more than 1,100 campers at Lutherlyn this past summer, as a result of population trends, economics, people having to decide between attending camp or the National Youth Gathering, our total numbers were about 140 below last year---and our projection for this year. We also experienced an unusual number of unanticipated “no choice” expenses. These included but are not limited to replacement of no less than nine chemical feed pumps and other repairs to the sewer and water plants, furnace replacement in three of our buildings, major repairs to both of our tractors, repairs to several of our day camp vehicles, federally mandated upgrades to our swimming pool, and the replacement of an air conditioning unit in our dining hall. These expenses plus the decrease in the number of campers this summer have had a significant negative impact on our budget. Won’t you please consider a gift at this time? Gifts can be mailed to Lutherlyn, P O Box 355, Prospect, PA. 16052. – Thank you, Pastor Randy Gullickson
